Providing RE resources for local schools

Reception [Unit R/c] 7 hours

This unit is about change and growth in the natural world.

  • What is changing in the natural world this term?
  • Which natural things appear dead but are really alive?
  • What do Christians and Jews believe about the beginning of the world?

Much of the material for this unit is science based rather than RE.

Watch the clip from ‘Pathways of Belief - Easter’ video which tells the story of ‘The Waterbugs and the Dragonfly’. The book of the story is available on request or click here.

We also have copies of ‘All Year Long’ which describes the changing seasons.

We have 16 copies of ‘Circle of Days’ - a picture story book which could be used for shared looking/reading with the whole class.

Read the biblical account of Creation from ‘The Storyteller Bible’ or use ‘In the Beginning’ Big Book.

Watch BBC ‘Pathways of Belief - Creation’ video which uses words from ‘Wonderful Earth’ by Mick Inkpen. The book is also available for loan.

Watch the ‘ALF’ video for clips of children talking about their ideas on creation (available from us).

Activity Ideas

Sequencing - put the days of creation in the correct order (worksheet available on request) or look at the seasons. Click here for a photo of a cherry tree taken in each of the four seasons. Think about hot and cold colours.

Create a new creature from playdough.

There is a wealth of natural material to explore for this unit.

Reception [Unit R/d]  3 hours

This unit is about: The Easter Story

  • What makes me happy and unhappy
  • What made Jesus’ friends happy and unhappy at Easter time?
  • Which things do Christians eat at Easter to remind them of the story?

Read the relevant chapters in ‘The Storyteller Bible’.

Look at pictures in ‘A Very Special Sunday’ Big Book.

Listen to some sad/happy music, such as Bach’s Easter Oratorio, and ask the children to imagine how the feelings of Jesus’ friends changed over the Easter weekend.

Look at a sad face picture - turn upside down to see a happy face. A copy of this can be obtained from us or click the symbol to download.

Read ‘Sad News, Glad News’.  Think about the symbolism of hot-cross buns (sadness) and Easter eggs (new life/hope/happiness).

Background information on Easter Food is available in Year 4 - click here.

Look at our Hot Cross Bun and Easter Egg Assemblies.

The painting of Mary Magdalene by Savoldo in Jesus Through Art could be adapted for use in Reception.  What is Mary thinking?

An Easter Resource Pack was given to all schools in 1999 - we have copies of the worksheets available on request.
